A recent edition of the weekly E-Scrap News by Bob Johnson details how lax IT hardware inventory practices put IT asset disposal service providers at risk.

As he explains in the article, “Clients often provide ITADs with inventories of IT assets either with or in advance of equipment deliveries. More often than not, what’s actually received differs from what’s listed. Even if the client has not required it, not notifying the client of that disparity is where the culpability comes into play. Should any missing asset turn up later, the client is going to report that according to their records, the device in question was sent to the ITAD. Even if the client did not request notification—or declined the option—regulators will view ITAD as the only point at which the client could have been alerted to the missing asset.”

Johnson says he has always cautioned service providers about relying on client’s compliance awareness. “It is unreasonable to expect that clients understand the subtleties of incident reporting and resolution. Service providers who take advantage of this ignorance, or are themselves unaware, put themselves at risk. The shame of it is that they are missing a great opportunity to better protect their clients, while at the same time differentiating themselves from the competition.”
